Memento
Work Note:
Memento is an exploration of musical form and perception, inspired by the Christopher Nolan film of the same name. The underlying structure of the piece was composed as a linear progression from consonance to dissonance, which were then cut into sections and reordered. Like the film, this piece unfolds in a non- linear fashion. It begins in the middle, then alternately moves forwards and backwards through the original chronology, ultimately concluding at the opening. This combination of going forwards and backwards creates moments of stark contrast and unexpected familiarity. The contrasts, but also the familiarities, become increasingly more pronounced as the form reaches the extremes of the initial linear progression. Memento is also a study on whether music can tell a story, and if so, whether that story remains despite the disruption.
The piece is also available in the Chronological Version
